First round girls' Regional games produce a few upsets

Sixteen games were played at eight sites around the state on Thursday in the opening round of the Class 6A girls basketball tournament.

In Sapulpa, the top ranked Lady Chiefs had little problem beating Tahlequah, 78-37. The other contest was a slight upset as Bartlesville topped Sand Springs, 47-42. Sapulpa will host Bartlesville on Saturday.

In Claremore, the favorites won, but not easily. No. 7 Claremore struggled to beat Ponca City, 61-49, while No. 9 Tulsa Memorial needed two overtime periods to subdue Broken Arrow in a very low scoring game, 36-35.

Claremore will host Tulsa Memorial on Saturday.

No. 6 Owasso will host Edmond Memorial on Saturday in the Regional finals after the two teams won on Thursday. Owasso eliminated Enid, 50-32, while Memorial dodged Muskogee's upset plans, 39-35.

Third ranked Union won at home against Stillwater, 44-27. In the other contest at Union, Edmond North nipped the slightly favored Jenks Lady Trojans, 47-43. Union will host the Lady Huskies on Saturday.

At Midwest City, the No. 2 Lady Bombers destroyed winless U. S. Grant, 67-9, while Westmoore edged Putnam City West by one point, 46-45. Westmoore will meet Midwest City on Saturday.

No. 5 Norman defeated sister school Norman North, 43-27. In the other contest at Norman High School, Choctaw walloped Yukon, 70-36. Norman will host Chotaw on Saturday.

Fourth ranked Del City will play Lawton Eisenhower on Saturday in the regional finals at Del City after the Lady Eagles beat Moore, 68-27, and Ike upset Santa Fe, 57-41.

All Saturday games will scheduled for 1:30 PM.
