Putnam City rolls past Yukon
It took a quarter for No. 1 Putnam City to shake
off a pesky Yukon team in the opening round of the Class 6A state basketball
championships on Friday evening at Putnam City.
The Millers never led in the game, but tied the
Pirates on three occasions in the first four minutes.
After that is was a rout. Putnam City scored
inside on dunks and on the outside with three-pointers.
But more impressively, they played great
defense. The Pirates used their feet to go belly button to belly button
against Yukon. It was obviously something the Millers were unaccustomed to
dealing with.
As usual, it was Xavier Henry led the way for
the powerful Pirates with 29 points. His capable sidekick, Garen Wright,
added 12.
Yukon's Chris Mustain impressed everyone with
his outside shooting as he tallied 14 points. He is just a sophomore.
The loss eliminates the Millers from further
competition in the tournament.
The Pirates will host Mustang tonight at 7:00
for the Regional championship.
