PUTNAM CITY NORTH TO PLAY FOR 6A BOYS TITLE!

PC North 69, Santa Fe 60

Coach Bill Robertson’s Putnam City Panthers will play Tulsa Memorial on Saturday at 8:45 PM in the Ford Center for the Class 6A State title after beating neighbor Edmond Santa Fe, 69-60.

PCN’s Dennon Mitchell scored 23 to lead all scorers.

Nic Combs tallied 22 for Santa Fe.

North led the Wolves until midway through the second period when Combs scored a basket to tie the game, 23-23. A minute later, Driver added a field goal to give SF the lead. But football quarterback turned basketball player Matt Veazey nailed a 30 footer for a three-pointer. Combs sank a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left in the second quarter to give Santa Fe a one-point lead at halftime.

The Panthers overwhelmed the Wolves the third period to open a nine-point lead. Dante Jordan scored eight points for North.

Down by as many as 12 in the first minutes of the final stanza, Santa Fe started fouling. Putting North at the free throw line seemed to help, as the Wolves closed to within a point with 1:57 left in the game.

But Mitchell, Brentrell Friday and Jordan pushed the lead back to nine points, 64-55, with 42 seconds remaining.

Putnam City North finished the game with a nine-point victory.

Michael Spinner and Ross Morrisett each scored 14 for Santa Fe.

North’s Jordan and Friday scored 14 and 13 points respectively.

The win was North’s fourth over Santa Fe this season.
