We still have not mentioned
Jenni's name ... yet
Evidently there was a column in the metro newspaper that stirred up a head
football coach in a college town just northeast of our capitol city.
OKCPrepSports advice to the coach
would have been to just let it go.
The game was over. His team had won. Can life get any better than that?
Well, maybe that is the time to take on a columnist who wrote some things
that upset the coach? Of course, this is the coach that does not read the
newspaper.
Ask yourself this - after a game has been played, do you ever pick up the
morning newspaper and read an article or column about that game? No. It was
old news. It was just history at that point. No one else would have read the
column.
Remember when the move "The Last Temptation of Christ" was released? It was
not expected to last very long in the theaters - until someone spoke out on
it. Suddenly people were rushing to the theaters to see this controversial
movie.
If this coach had just kept his cool and talked about his team's win, then
it was over.
He might have asked for the columnist to meet with him privately and discuss
how displeased he was. But no, he goes on a "You Tube" tirade,
He has now been condemned by everyone from the Football Writers Association
of America to the New York Times.
So why did he go nuts? Was he protecting his player? Doubtful - for the
reasons listed above. He just made it worse. Did he want to avoid talking
about his defense - they did give up 718 passing and rushing yards. Or was
he reacting to the papers, who the week before said he was not fiery enough in
their loss to the No. 3 team in Alabama? But he would not have known what the
print media said about him since he doesn't read the newspapers.
Whatever his reasons, they were wrong and he just made it worse for the
young man he was supposedly trying to protect.
The 40-year old man needs to act like one.
