Wegner scores 31 as PC tops PCN
Two Putnam City school district teams qualified
for the Class 6A state playoffs this year. Unfortunately, they faced each
other in the first round.
The Putnam City Pirates beat the Putnam City
North Panthers in their first contest, 17-0. This time the winner moves,
while the loser goes home.
On the opening possession of the game, the
Panthers did something they were unable to do the first time - score points.
Josh Booker had 29 yards on this drive and Matt
Veazey completed two passes for 24 yards. Eventually the drive stalled and
the Panthers settled for a 30-yard field goal by Kevin Cabello.
The Pirates answered on their only possession of
the first quarter.
As usual the Pirates did it all on the ground.
Quarterback Nico Watson ran for 65 yards on six carries. The last carry was
good for a 23-yard touchdown.
Tyler Wegner kicked the extra point and the
Pirates led 7-0.
The Pirates increased their lead on the final
play of the first quarter as Keishawn Richardson intercepted a Veazey pass -
returning it 33 yards for the score.
On the Pirates first possession of the second
quarter, PC struck again.
On the initial play from scrimmage, Wegner broke
through the right side of the line, cut back to his left, and ran 81 yards
to the end zone.
This pushed the lead to 21-3.
The Panthers answered the Pirates' score with
one of their own.
Once again the Panthers fed the Pirates a
healthy dose of Booker. He had 28-yards, but when they were in the red zone
he was tackled for a 7-yard loss that ultimately led to another Cabello
field goal - cutting the lead to 15, 21-6.
The Pirates had 3:35 seconds left in the half
and they had to use them all. After getting a first down via a 26-yard run
on a fake punt, the Pirates were in good position to score again. Then the
Pirates were flagged for a crucial holding play and pushed the ball back to
the 39-yard line with just a few seconds left in the half.
Just as PC did at the end of the first quarter,
the Pirates scored on the final play, when Wegner scampered for the final 39
yards.
His extra-point kick was good - and the score at
halftime was 28-6.
PCO came out firing in the second half.
On the opening drive the Wegner show continued.
He had six carries for 52-yards and a touchdown. .
But the Panthers weren’t done yet. On the
ensuing drive they narrowed the gap when Veazey found Ethan Elrod for a
44-yard touchdown strike.
The Pirates inserted backup quarterback, Chris
Cormier, on the next possession.
On his third play, the Pirates called their
first pass of the night - and it was picked off by Dave Sinclair and
returned 32 yards for a touchdown.
That was as close as the Panthers would get as
the Pirates scored on their next two possessions.
The first was set up by a couple of nice runs by
Watson and finished off with a 1-yard dive by Greg Cortez.
The second score was a 56-yard run by Wegner.
gave the Panthers a 29-point lead, 49-20.
The Panthers had the final score of the night
when Veazey connected with William Winzeler on a 38-yard strike with 3:13
left in the game.
The same duo hooked up for a two-point
conversion.
The final score was 49-28.
The victory placed PC Head Coach Mark Little
second in the number of wins by a Putnam City football coach.
Little's players awarded him with a game ball
following the game.
The Pirates will travel to Tulsa Union on
Saturday for the second round of the playoffs.
