Panthers
shutout the Huskies
The Putnam City Panthers
looked to remain unbeaten Thursday night as they traveled to Wantland
Stadium to take on the Edmond North Huskies.
On a windy night, when the
flags were blowing stiff in the breeze, the Panthers were up to the task.
The Panthers received the
ball first and wasted no time to take a lead. Greg Lewis had a long return
to set up great field position, which was made even better with a facemask
penalty called against the Huskies.
Josh Booker had 17 yards on
five carries, but the Panthers were stopped short of the endzone. Kevin
Cabello hit a 22-yard field goal to put the Panthers up 3-0 with 8:25 left
in the first quarter.
The Panthers next
possession ended in points as well. PCN went on a 17-play drive to get into
scoring position.
Once again Booker was the
workhorse accounting for 43 yards. Matt Veazey completed three of four
passes for 22 yards on the drive as well.
The Panthers fell short of
the end zone, but Cabello connected from 30 yards out to push the lead to
six.
The Panther defense was
never in danger of giving up points and the offense continued to execute. On
their third possession the Panthers once again got in field goal range, but
this time Edmond North’s Corey Gable came off the end of the line and
blocked Cabello’s field goal attempt.
The score at the half was
6-0 Panthers.
The second half belonged to
the Panthers. On their first possession, Thomas Amos broke through the line
and ran 60 yards to the end zone. Shipton Bogle caught the two point
conversion and the Panthers led by 14 points.
On their next offensive
possession PCN scored in only three plays. Cabello did the major damage
with his hands instead of his feet, as he gained 31 yards on one pass. The
final 21 yards were delivered by Booker to put the Panthers up three
touchdowns.
The final score of the game
came courtesy of the defense.
With just 6:05 left in the
game Hunter Frantz intercepted a pass and ran it back 61 yards for the
score.
The final score was PC
North 28, Edmond North 0.
The Panthers moved to 2-0
and will be at PC Stadium for the first time next week as they face Putnam
City Original, who is also 2-0.
