Union wins on the scoreboard against
Putnam City
Do not look at the state sheet to
predict the score of the Union-Putnam City quarterfinal game.
Union led 15-12 in first downs.
Union out-shushed PC, 147-130, and
out-passed the Pirates, 185-149.
Putnam City had one turnover, while
Union had none. And the penalty yards were even.
So how did Union hold a 31-0 lead in the
first half? Field position is the answer.
Union constantly started at midfield,
while the Pirates were deep in their end of the field. And thus, the
Redskins will advance to meet Muskogee in a rematch of a week three
game, which Union won 26-11, next weekend in the Class 6A
semi-finals.
Union's 31 unanswered first half points
came on a pair of touchdown passes from Brandon Rogers to Anthony
Foster for 44-yards and to Tyler Atkinson for 20-yards, for 2 and 22
yards a pair of rushing touchdowns by Jeremy Smith and a 42-yard
field goal by Tress Way.
Putnam City's workhorse Tyler Wegner
scored late in the first half on a 2-yard run
Union added a final touchdown by Quadron
Henderson on a 4-yard run in the third period.
Wegner scored again for PC on a 12-yard
run.
With the two touchdowns and the two
extra-points kick scored by Wegner, he tallied 45 points in PC's
final two games.
The final score was Union 37, Putnam
City 14.
